Hunan Normal University, Changsha, Oct.14: After 2 years’ efforts of collecting, creating and choosing from the public, the University recently promulgated our new school motto, school spirit, school badge and school anthem. Zhang Guoji, Chairman of the University Council, and Liu Xiangrong, President of the University, joyfully expressed their congratulations, calling upon all the students and teachers to carry forward the school spirit for a bright future together.

    The motto and badge of a school are the embodiment of the school's human spirit and management principle, symbolizing, in condensed form, the school's history and tradition. Our previous motto was "Be industrious and strict, factual and creative, be devoted to education and united for progress"; since the issuing of this motto, it has encouraged all at HNU in the efforts towards the University's growth and development. As time went by, our University became one of a hundred universities in the nation that enjoy the status of development priority, and evidently experienced a profound university-wide transformation. HNU needed to keep pace with the age while continuing in the spirit of the old school motto. In the first half of 2004, our University collected new samples for the school motto and badge from society in order to further explore the spiritual core of the University’s history and culture, to inspire love for the University, and to encourage a sense of responsibility from students, faculty, staff and all alumna

    We received many samples when the notice of collecting school motto and badge had been publicized. In the second half of 2004, the University organized experts to examine and comment on the samples and made repeated amendments. In the first half of this year, new forms of school motto and school badge were finally publicized in the University’s web site.

　　According to the requirement that the the motto and badge should be concise, meaningful, emobody the cultural essence of the University, be consistent with the school's guiding principle and the human spirit, we finally reached the decision to adopt “benevolence, love, excellence, diligence” as our new school motto, which was the school motto of the National Teachers’ College, out of which grew HNU.

　　The new badge looks solemn, elegant and novel, and is concise and meaningful. The English name of the University and the year of its foundation are added to it by the President’s suggestion.

　　For the preparation of the new school anthem, we organized a group of anthem creation made up of senior professors from College of Liberal Arts and College of History and Culture to produce at least seven songs for our choice. After many rounds of discussion and amendments, the song composed by Tang Yongqiang, a faculty from Music College of HNU, was chosen as the new school anthem. The lyric of the anthem is written by Peng Bin, a senior professor from the College of Arts of HNU.
